Patterns for the Creative Spirit
When I was a teenager, having an autograph book was as necessary
as having a cell phone is today. I enjoyed collecting the signatures
of my friends and the cute little sayings they would write. There
were a couple of them that imitated math problems:

Imagine my surprise when my Mom resurrected her own autograph book to show me. Now, I would say that it was charmingly vintage, but as a kid, I just thought it was old! I was shocked to think my Mom had something as cool as an autograph book when she was young. And I was a little disturbed to realize that the fad I thought was my generation’s invention was nothing new. Maybe there really IS nothing new under the sun, but another way to look at it is that some things are time-tested and valuable in every age.
Making art is an expression of creativity. Choice of color and design reveal a lot about the maker and the time frame in which the art is made. Gifts from the heart are never passé. Signatures of famous folks may be collectible, but autographs of loved ones are priceless. Always sign all your work.
Create and celebrate—Mary Ann
P.S. My favorite expression from my Mom’s autograph book: Yours
until Virginia lets Delaware her New Jersey.

Tips
To prepare for machine quilting, paste wax the surface of your sewing table. Apply the wax sparingly and buff it vigorously to make the surface slick for easier sliding of the quilt. Be sure to remove all of the excess wax. Wax can be used on acrylic extension tables that fit around the bed of your machine. The wax will help fill in scratches on the acrylic as well as making it more slippery.
My favorite tool for burying thread tails beneath the surface of a quilt is the Easy-Threading Hand Needle by Dritz. The needle has a slit at the top of the eye where you can snap in the loose thread rather than try to thread it through the eye. If the thread is very short, insert the needle next to the point where the thread comes out of the quilt as if taking a stitch, and push the needle in so that about 1/4 inch of the eye-end of the needle is still exposed. Snap the thread into the eye and pull the needle through to bury the short thread. The needle comes in various sizes so you can use it on thicker threads like those used for couching and twisted threads that come unraveled when you try to get them through the eye of a regular needle.
Keep an emery board by your sewing machine. This little tool is
great for filing away the rough edges on spools of thread that seem
to always catch the thread as you sew.
Having trouble separating the paper from the back of fusible web?
Scratch a line through the paper with a straight pin. Separate the
paper at the line and peel it away easily.
Batiks are the perfect fabric choice for raw edge appliqués. Their
dense weave inhibits raveling.
Skirt hangers are a great tool for organizing your studio closet. Use them to hold finished and unfinished small projects, small cutting mats and appliqué pressing sheets.
